A spectacular weekend, from every point of view. A weekend that kept all fans in suspense from the start of free practice until the last lap of Sunday’s race. Our Suomy Rider, Pecco Bagnaia, not only set the best times in the race and in free practice but also dominated Sunday’s race, despite the innocent fall he suffered during the Sprint Race.
Pecco Bagnaia was the fastest rider already in the free practice session thanks to a time of 1:36.025, rewriting the new absolute lap record in Jerez. Despite this, the Sprint started uphill with Pecco starting from seventh on the grid. Unfortunately at the start of the third lap, Pecco found himself squeezed between Binder and Bezzecchi at turn one and was unable to avoid an innocent fall.
The long race on Sunday has become, without a doubt, one of the most competitive and spectacular races. Pecco was the author of a perfect start from seventh position on the grid, passing fourth at the first corner and first, already at the end of the first lap. The battle with Marc Marquez for the top step of the podium was epic. Our rider triumphed ahead of Marc Marquez and Marco Bezzecchi.
The two-time World Champion set the race record with an excellent 1’37.449 (with three laps to go).
At the end of the Spanish Grand Prix, our Suomy Rider, Pecco Bagnaia finds himself second in the standings, 17 points from the championship lead.
“I was quite comfortably following the riders in the leading group and the goal was to overtake them, but it was not easy due to some coming togethers and for what eventually happened. It’s really a pity because I was feeling very strong and I believe the win was within reach, but things went differently. We will try to battle for the podium and eventually for the win tomorrow, but it’ll be important to stay out of trouble and try to ride at my own pace.”
Francesco Bagnaia – Sprint Race DNF
“It was simply fantastic. We needed such a win, not only for myself but also for the team and everybody working with me. It was a very intense race, and it was crucial to make it to the lead on lap one. The overtake on the outside was really a nice one, I enjoyed it a lot. The race was decided in the last five laps: when Marc closed the gap I only tried to wait and fend off his attacks straight away and after his second attempt I decided to push as hard as I could in order to create a safety margin up to the finish line. I managed to set the fastest lap at the end, and everything went perfectly. I’m really happy: this is my third consecutive win in the full race here and that makes everything even more special.”
