Our Suomy Rider, Francesco Bagnaia, in this last race weekend at the beautiful Silverstone circuit, also demonstrated that he is among the fastest riders. Unfortunately, he slipped during the Sprint Race but managed to secure the third step of the podium in Sunday’s main race.
A weekend marked by the number three for Pecco. Already on Friday, he set the third-fastest time in free practice and also secured third place on the grid in qualifying with a time of 1:58.030, set just two minutes from the end – with a gap of only 119 thousandths from the top. In the Sprint Race, he set the fastest lap but slipped without consequences at turn four. Pecco manages to take the third step of the podium in the long race on Sunday, he could have won if he hadn’t had grip problems!
A weekend that will still be remembered thanks to the celebrations for the 75th anniversary of the MotoGP World Championship. On this occasion, Pecco Bagnaia wore his S1-XR GP with a special vintage design.
SPRINT RACE
Our rider made an excellent start: starting from the third spot on the grid, he managed to take the lead already at the first corner. The reigning world champion, however, lost three positions in the first few turns. Pecco, did not want to give up and on the fourth lap, he set the fastest lap, but unfortunately, he slipped at turn four.
RACE
Bagnaia, the reigning champion, also surprised everyone in Sunday’s race with an excellent start. He took the lead already at the first turn. Our Suomy rider maintained the lead of the race until nine laps from the end when, due to grip issues, he was overtaken by three riders, including his teammate. Pecco still managed to hold off the pursuers and finish the race in third position.
At the end of the tenth Grand Prix of the season, Bagnaia is in second place in the rider standings, three points behind the leader Martín.
“I got a good start to the race but then I couldn’t lift the bike up at turn one, so three riders got past me. I struggled a little bit with the rear-end feeling in the first two laps, then I managed to get up to speed and to bridge the gap with the leading riders. Our potential is really high, but unfortunately, I went in turn four a little too early and the front tucked. The race pace was incredible: I could have qualified tenth with my quickest lap of the race. It’s a shame, because I was feeling comfortable and I think I could have overtaken Aleix (Espargaró) at either turn six or turn 15, and then eventually battle for the win. Unfortunately, I crashed and it was my mistake, but to know that allows me to turn the page and move forward with the same level of confidence in our chances.”
Francesco Bagnaia – Sprint Race NC
“I’m satisfied because after yesterday’s crash, it was important to finish the race. It wasn’t easy: I got into the lead and tried to manage the race as best as I could but unfortunately, as I couldn’t push as hard as I wanted with the front-tyre, I had to use the rear tyre more in order to get the bike turning. This led to some struggles at the end of the race. When Martín overtook me, I tried to stay with him but I almost tucked the front at turn seven; this is when I thought that, after yesterday’s crash, it was better to think about making it to the finish line. It’s clear that Enea, when he’s strong already from Friday, is really hard to beat, as he’s known for being very strong in the final part of the race – and he show exactly that today.”
